Photographs & photography ramblings, tips and techniques for models and photographers

Photo Shoot: Alex Westfalen

In November, before the weather got too cold, I got to shoot with Alex Westfalen in the Southern California desert. I love the texture contrast of the sand and the shimmering skin.

Dites Moi, Pourquoi?

I was raised on the best of the best of the classic musicals. And near the top of the Broadway pantheon is South Pacific. It's based on Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener, who won the 1948 Pulitzer prize for the novel about intergenerational and interracial love amid the trials of World War II. The musical by the incomparable Rogers and Hammerstein and directed by Joshua Logan premiered on Broadway the following year. And my parents, though both were of rural working class backgrounds: my father having grown up in a Montana copper mining town and my mother in a Pennsylvania coal mining town; made sure we understood what the song You've Got to be Carefully Taught was all about. If you don't know, go listen to it. Then remember that this play premiered in 1949, when you could be put in prison in over 20 states for the romances central to the story.

I haven't seen the movie in some years. One of those happy, serendipitous moments that happen when you have a TiVo, it picked up South Pacific as one of it's suggestions. So I watched it again. On this watching, it occurred to me to wonder what the song Dites Moi is about. So I went looking for the full lyrics online. I found countless copies, all the same, and they are:

Dites-moi pourquoi la vie est belle,
Dies-moi pourquoi la vie est gai,
Dites-moi pourquoi, chere Mad'moiselle,
Est-ce que parce que, vous m'aimez?

And this is the provided English translation all those web sites provide:

Tell me why the sky is filled with music,
Tell me why we fly on clouds above
Can it be that we can fly to music
Just because, just because
We're in love?

Okay... I've had one quarter of French in college (more years ago than I care to admit), but I can tell you that ain't even close. Here's a much more accurate translation:

Tell me why life is beautiful.
Tell me why life is merry.
Tell me why, dear miss,
Because you love me?

One quarter of French, with a little help from Babel Fish.

January Web Site Update

Happy New Year!

An update to the website was long overdue. To make up for the long absence of updates, I've done a complete update of the Featured Models page of the website:
http://www.louislasalle.com/Assets001/Photos/catalog1.html

You'll find seven new models five models with new shoots:

Jesse Garcia

Jesse is a long time performer. Among his many talents, he performs on the "lyra", the aerial ring. We'd long planned to shoot him on that and finally managed to make the necessary arrangements in October. This shoot by-the-way was just five months after Jesse had open heart surgery to fix an aneurism caused by a congenital heart defect. The man is a total wonder! You'll find the new work on pages 23 and 24.

Alan Valdez
You wouldn't know from the photos but this was one of Alan's first few photo shoots. I'm sure you'll agree he's absolutely amazing.

Amir
Last summer I took a photography workshop given by the incomparable Andreas Bitesnich just outside Vienna. I took advantage of the trip to shoot a local Viennese model before the workshop. This is what you can do early on a Sunday morning in the United Nations complex when you have a really gutsy model -- and it was his suggestion.

Nathan Lewis
Nathan hails from the UK and by day is a technical professional. This part time model has a boy next door charm and an unusual ease in front of the camera.

Eric Gordon
There's only one way to describe Eric and that's BIG!

Mark Joseph
Mark has one of those bodies that light just kisses. He looks like something fresh from the mold, smooth and unblemished.

Troy Moreno
A US citizen, but hailing from Mexico, Troy contacted me when he was going to be passing through on business and we did this wonderful shoot.Michael SausedoMichael's a local guy just getting started in modeling.

Alex Westfalen
My second shoot with fan favorite Alex Westfalen. Alex is gorgeous as ever and the new work starts on page 8.

Peter Le
My first shoot with Peter Le was in January of last year. I was his second shoot on his new modeling career. He's since exploded on the scene and has been photographed by a number of excellent photographers. At this second shoot with Peter he was even more built and cut. A truly exceptional physique. Peter will be competing in body building competitions this coming year. The new work with Peter starts on page 5.

Bryan Seth
It was once again a pleasure to work with Bryan and you'll find the new work beginning on page 6.

Morgen Arild
After taking a few years off from modeling, Morgen Arild is back stronger than ever. The new work begins on page 8 and includes some unusual new lighting.

There's more to come. Enjoy!!

Photo Shoot: Bobby Momenteller

A couple weeks before Christmas, I had the pleasure of working with Bobby Momenteller. Among other things, we had some fun with some new props and did a variation on "One Singular Sensation..."

Photo Shoot: Jorge Rodriguez

I worked with beautiful Alan Valdez from Mexico about a month ago out in the desert sands. Alan was a real champ. We also did some beautiful studio work as well as a bedroom shoot and a shower shoot. You'll be seeing the work from those shoots in the near future.

Photo Shoot: Nathan Lewis

Nathan and I exchanged mutual "fan mails" for a while before his visiting from the UK presented an opportunity for us to work together. We had a very good afternoon of work and got lots of beautiful photos. I look forward to my next opportunity to work with Nathan. You'll see more of our work in the near future on my website.

Photo Shoot: Michael Sausedo

Michael was referred to me by my friend and fellow photographer Mark Beyer. Michael is relatively new to modeling, but he's obviously not new to bodybuilding. You can look forward to seeing more work from this shoot in the future.

Photo Shoot: Jesse Garcia on the Lyra

Jesse is one of my all time favorite models, and probably the one I have photographed the most. It helps that we've become great friends and we live only about 30 minutes apart. One of the things that Jesse brings to a photo shoot is a long history as a performer. He's been performing professionally for 27 years. One of Jesse's performance pieces is the aerial ring, also known as the Lyra. We've been wanting to photograph Jesse on the Lyra for a long time and have just never managed to quite put it together. Well, we've finally done it! Jesse and I extend our heart felt thanks to Greg Angelo and his crew at Velocity Circus for providing the space and rigging expertise:

Photo on the BBC

I've sold a photo for use in an upcoming BBC production! Consuming Passion: 100 Years of Mills & Boon will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Mills & Boon publishing house, venerable publishers of romance novels. Mills & Boon goes by the name Harlequin in North America, the name of their North American distributor who acquired them in 1971. The story is part historical drama and part fiction.

Consuming Passion will air on BBC 4 sometime in the Autumn. The photo shown below will appear in the film in the context of a university lecture about how the romance novel here changed over the years with changes in society. It will represent the modern ideal of the romantic hero.
